Streamline™ FTS

 

Streamline™ Flow Transfer Standard

Chinook manufactures the patented Streamline™ FTS, a high performance flow meter used in air quality measurements. Due to its superior and consistent performance, the Streamline™ FTS has become the "standard" flow meter in the ambient air quality measurements industry. The Streamline™ FTS is available in standard flow ranges of 0.5 – 6 and 5 – 20 lpm or 5 – 25 lpm. The Streamline™ FTS can be manufactured, modified or custom-calibrated for other flow rates up to 55 lpm.

The patented Streamline™ FTS provides a robust means for performing flow audits and calibrations in the field. By design, the Streamline™ FTS avoids the difficulties that can occur with other devices when performing flow rate measurements under varying ambient weather conditions. The Streamline™ FTS is an orifice-type flow meter that determines the volumetric (or actual) flow rate from the pressure drop across the device. Utilizing this measured pressure drop, as well as the local temperature and atmospheric pressure, the flow rate is computed using the unique calibration constants provided with each Streamline FTS.

The inherent advantages of the Streamline™ FTS lie in its design, materials of construction, and true NIST-traceable calibration. The specially selected materials of the patented orifice allow the Streamline™ FTS to be used over a very wide range of ambient temperature and pressure without affecting performance or calibration. An integral wind shield allows the device to be used in windy conditions. The Streamline™ FTS is constructed and packaged for rugged field use. Chinook Engineering uses a unique sonic nozzle device developed in close consultation with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) to perform a multi-point calibration of each unit. Following consultation with the Fluid Flow Group at NIST in Gaithersburg, MD, Chinook Engineering utilizes a high performance sonic nozzle calibration apparatus to perform multi-point calibrations of each Streamline™ unit.

When the Streamline™ FTS is calibrated at laboratory conditions, the patented orifice element provides a calibration relationship based on the specific geometry it had at those laboratory conditions. Because of the durable, patented materials of which it is constructed, its geometry, performance and calibration do not change with changes in air temperature, humidity or pressure. Other flow rate measurement devices can expand, contract or distort when used at conditions other than those at which they were calibrated, providing unreliable flow rate measurements away from the lab. This situation is at its worst when the flow rate measurement device relies on polymeric, metallic, or combined materials, which have high and/or variable thermal expansion properties.

Chinook's state-of-the-art flow metrology apparatus ensures that each Streamline™ device provides NIST-traceable measurements to primary mass and time standards. The calibrations of most other devices are based upon NIST traceable volume standards (traceable to physical dimensions), and not to standards for flow rate. The USEPA has evaluated the Streamline™ FTS unit over a wide range of ambient air conditions. The testing showed that the device provides very accurate flow rate measurements through a variety of ambient environments (maximum estimated error of 0.8%). The Streamline™ FTS is the definitive instrument for flow rate measurements for ambient air samplers, in the field or in the lab.

Streamline™ Low-Flow FTS

The low-flow FTS is typically calibrated over the flow range of 0.5 to 6 lpm. Custom calibration flow ranges are available.

Streamline™ High-Flow FTS

The high-flow FTS is typically calibrated over the flow range of 5 to 20 lpm. Under specific circumstances, the Streamline™ high-flow FTS can be calibrated for a flow range as high as 25 lpm, without physical modifications. With orifice modification, the FTS can be calibrated for a flow range from 5 lpm up to 25 lpm or higher. Other custom calibration flow ranges are also available.

Custom Flow Rates

Under specific circumstances, the Streamline™ high-flow FTS can be calibrated for a flow range as high as 25 lpm, without physical modifications. With orifice modification, the FTS can be calibrated for a flow range from 5 lpm up to 25 lpm or higher. Other custom calibration flow ranges are also available.

Accessories

1-1/4" Flow Adapter Kit
The Streamline™ FTS products are designed to fit directly on 1-1/4" OD sampler inlet tubes. Chinook recognizes that some flow measurements require different connections, so the 1-1/4" FTS Adapter Kit is available as an optional accessory. A kit includes a Delrin adapter for the 1-1/4" outlet side of the FTS, a clamp and 3 feet of tubing. The Delrin adapter has a ¼" barbed outlet fitting. The tubing is attached between the adapter and a user-supplied fitting suited for the sampler inlet.
